Measure the top, then add room
Enter the width and length of your quilt top, then the extra batting needed on each side. Ask your quilter what they need before buying. Four inches per side is the editable starting value, matching Trace Creek Quilting’s preparation guidance; other quilters and methods can require a different amount.
A 60 × 72 inch quilt with 4 inches extra on every side needs at least 68 × 80 inches of batting: add twice the extra to both dimensions. Inches and centimeters convert your existing inputs using 1 inch = 2.54 cm.
Compare actual dimensions
The example packages use The Warm Company’s Warm & Natural sizes: Craft 34 × 45, Baby 45 × 60, Twin 72 × 90, Full 90 × 96, Queen 90 × 108 and King 120 × 124 inches. These are examples, not universal bed-size standards or a shopping recommendation. A package name alone does not promise a fit. Check the actual dimensions on the package you buy.
Both orientations are checked. The fitting example with the smallest area is suggested; an exact fit has no spare beyond the extra you entered. If none fits, look for a larger single piece or batting by the yard. This tool does not calculate piecing or roll yardage.
Before cutting
Batting and loft describes the middle layer and its thickness. Follow the manufacturer’s care and quilting-distance instructions. The calculation does not predict shrinkage, add squaring room or decide your quilting method. Add any further room to the extra field yourself.
Print the current plan or choose Save as PDF in the print dialog. Optional My projects saving keeps the inputs so you can reopen them on another device; using and printing the calculator stays open to everyone.
