Fabric count

In cross-stitch, the number of Aida squares or evenweave threads per inch of fabric.

Also called: Aida count, cross-stitch fabric count

Turn stitches into inches

On 14-count Aida, one cross over each square gives 14 stitches per inch. A design 140 stitches wide therefore measures 140 ÷ 14 = 10 inches across. On 18-count Aida, that same design is about 7.78 inches wide.

Higher count means smaller stitches and a smaller finished design for the same stitch count.

Check how many threads each stitch spans

Linen and evenweave labels count threads per inch. If each cross spans two threads of 28-count fabric, you get 28 ÷ 2 = 14 stitches per inch. Do not divide the design’s stitch count by 28 in that case.

Leave fabric around the stitching

The stitched design size excludes the border needed for handling and finishing. A 10 inch wide design with a 3 inch border at each side needs fabric 16 inches wide. Work out the height separately and follow your finishing method’s border requirements.
