Jelly roll

A roll of precut fabric strips 2½ inches wide and about 42 inches long, typically 40 strips.

Also called: strip roll, 2½ inch strips

What’s inside

Each strip is 2½ inches wide and as long as the width of fabric, about 42 inches. Moda’s standard Jelly Roll has 40 strips, though some vary.

Using strips for binding

2½ inches is a common cut width for double-fold binding, so jelly roll strips can be used for scrappy binding. Each strip still has selvages to trim, and each diagonal join shortens the run by about one strip width. Enter the width after trimming selvages in the quilt binding calculator; it then accounts for the chosen joins.
