Machine needle size

Sewing machine needles are sized with two numbers, such as 80/12. The first is the needle’s diameter in hundredths of a millimetre.

Also called: needle size 80/12, needle numbers

Reading 80/12

In 80/12, 80 is the metric size: the needle is 0.80 mm thick. 12 is the American (Singer) size for the same needle. In both systems a bigger number is a thicker needle.

Size Diameter
60/8 0.60 mm
70/10 0.70 mm
75/11 0.75 mm
80/12 0.80 mm
90/14 0.90 mm
100/16 1.00 mm
110/18 1.10 mm

Size is only half the choice

Needles also come in types with different points, such as universal, jersey and denim. Choose the type for your fabric, then the size for its weight and your thread. See also gauge, where needle and wire numbers run in opposite directions.
