The free loops make the design possible
Ordinary body stitches are US single crochet in the back loop. A mosaic double crochet reaches an available front loop two rows or rounds below. Borders can use a different stitch treatment.
Flat rows and rounds
Flat overlay is usually worked with the right side facing for every row, joining at the starting edge and fastening off at the other edge. Right-handed work travels right to left; left-handed work travels the other way.
Joined rounds can also keep the right side facing. They need their own starting, joining and color-change instructions; the flat-row setup cannot simply be assumed. Our mosaic maker provides separate flat and joined-round plans.
Flat work can leave many yarn ends. Finishing methods vary, including weaving ends or covering them with an envelope border. Compare inset mosaic, which uses two-row color bands.
