Quilting cotton

The 100% cotton, plain-woven fabric most quilts are made from, usually sold 42–44 inches wide.

Also called: quilter’s cotton, patchwork cotton

Cotton fabric intended for patchwork

Quilting cotton generally means woven cotton sold for patchwork and quilting, commonly in plain weave. Check the fiber label, finish and actual width; the name does not guarantee one weight or usable cutting width.

Measure before planning cuts

Remove selvages when establishing usable fabric width. A nominal 44-inch fabric can offer less width for finished cuts.

Other fabrics can be used in quilts, but their stretch, bulk, shrinkage and care needs may differ. Follow the pattern and fabric maker’s guidance, and test unfamiliar combinations before cutting the full project.
