Stick of butter

A US stick of butter is ½ cup, 8 tablespoons, 4 ounces or about 113 grams. Four sticks make a pound.

Also called: butter stick, quarter-pound stick

The conversions

Sticks Volume Weight
½ ¼ cup (4 tbsp) 2 oz, about 57 g
1 ½ cup (8 tbsp) 4 oz, about 113 g
2 1 cup (16 tbsp) 8 oz, about 227 g
4 2 cups (32 tbsp) 1 lb, about 454 g

USDA lists one tablespoon of butter as about 14 g, so 8 tablespoons come to the same 113 g as a stick.

European and other recipes

Butter outside the US is often sold in 250 g blocks, about 2.2 sticks (250 ÷ 113). When a recipe gives grams, weigh the butter. When it gives “1 cup butter”, that’s 2 US sticks.
