Stitch count

The number of stitches across and down a cross-stitch design, such as 140 × 100. It sets the design’s size.

Also called: design size in stitches, stitch dimensions

Where to find it

Look for the design dimensions on the chart or near its key, written as width × height: for example 140 × 100. If they are missing, find the leftmost and rightmost grid columns used anywhere in the design, and count every column between them, including gaps. Do the same from the topmost to bottommost used row. Counting only occupied stitches in one row can miss the full design’s width.

Turning stitches into inches

Divide each number by the stitches per inch of your fabric:

Fabric 140 stitches wide 100 stitches tall
14-count Aida 10 in 7.1 in
16-count Aida 8.75 in 6.25 in
18-count Aida 7.8 in 5.6 in
28-count evenweave over two 10 in 7.1 in

That is the stitched area only. Add a border on every side to get the fabric size; see design size and fabric size.
