Wraps per inch (WPI)

How many times a yarn wraps side by side around a ruler or card in one inch. It helps estimate yarn weight when the label is missing.

Also called: WPI

How to count

Wrap the yarn around a ruler or a piece of card so each wrap sits next to the last, touching but not squashed or overlapping. Count the wraps in one inch. Thicker yarn gives fewer wraps.

What the count means

Wraps per inch Likely weight
30–40+ 0 Lace
14–30 1 Super fine
12–18 2 Fine
11–15 3 Light (DK)
9–12 4 Medium (worsted, aran)
6–9 5 Bulky
5–6 6 Super bulky
1–4 7 Jumbo

These Craft Yarn Council ranges overlap, so WPI narrows the choice rather than giving one answer. Knit or crochet a gauge swatch to confirm. See yarn weight.
