What it’s for
Hexagons fit together with no gaps, so hex paper is handy for planning tiled or tessellated designs. It’s also useful for sketching hexagon patchwork.
It is different from isometric paper, which is ruled in triangles. Six of those triangles make a hexagon.
Hexagon measurements
A hexagon’s size can be given by its side length or by its width. For a hexagon with side s:
| Measurement | Formula | For a 1 inch side |
|---|---|---|
| Corner to corner | 2 × s | 2 in |
| Flat side to flat side | √3 × s (about 1.732 × s) | 1.73 in |
| Area | (3√3 ÷ 2) × s² (about 2.598 × s²) | 2.6 sq in |
Check which measurement a pattern means before you print or cut.
Make a sheet with the printable paper generator. Choose Hexagon and select the side length, then print at Actual size and check the scale line.
