One working color at a time
Mosaic crochet builds a design using ordinary background stitches and taller stitches reaching into earlier rows. In the two-color methods supported here, each row or round uses a single working color. Our instructions use US crochet terms.
Overlay and inset
Overlay body stitches use back loops, leaving front loops for tall stitches two rows or rounds below. Flat work is normally worked with the right side facing; joined rounds can also keep that side facing.
Inset uses two worked rows per chart band. Chains reserve skipped spaces; a tall stitch is worked into a same-colored stitch three worked rows below on the right-side pass.
Chart keys vary. An X marks the tall stitch in our mosaic maker, but always read the key supplied with another pattern.
