Evenweave and linen

Cross-stitch fabrics counted by threads per inch, usually stitched over two threads, so a 28-count fabric gives 14 stitches per inch.

Also called: evenweave, linen, counted-thread fabric

Count the threads, then halve it

Evenweave and linen used for counted cross-stitch are labeled by threads per inch. Unlike the clear blocks of Aida, you count the individual threads to place each stitch. When you work over two threads each way, the stitches per inch is half the fabric count.

Fabric Stitched Stitches per inch
28-count evenweave or linen over two 14
32-count linen over two 16
14-count Aida over one square 14

That is why 28-count evenweave over two gives the same design size as 14-count Aida.

Don’t divide by the label count

To find the finished size, divide the stitch count by the stitches per inch, not by the thread count on the label. A 140-stitch design on 28-count fabric over two is 140 ÷ 14 = 10 inches, not 5.
