Graph paper

Paper printed with a regular grid of fine lines, measured by squares per inch or by square size in millimetres.

Also called: grid paper, squared paper, quad paper

How the grid is described

Graph paper is described by how big its squares are:

  • Squares per inch. Four squares per inch means 1 ÷ 4 = ¼ inch between neighboring lines.
  • Millimeters per square. A 5 mm grid has two squares per centimeter. For one maker’s example, LEUCHTTURM1917 uses 5 × 5 mm squares in its squared notebooks.
  • Millimetre paper has 10 squares per centimetre, so each square is 1 mm.

Grid size is a choice, rather than one standard for all graph paper. Read the spacing on the sheet or choose it in the generator.

The graph paper generator makes a PDF with the spacing you choose. Print it at actual size so the squares measure true; see print at actual size. For triangle grids, see isometric paper.
